Holdings
The USMA Archives collection, which totals approximately 1,400 cubic feet in volume, dates from the Academy's establishment in 1802 through 1995. Holdings prior to 1838, especially those from the 1802-17 period, are limited, due to a fire in that year that destroyed some of the Academy's earlier records. The collection's primary purpose is to document the U.S. Corps of Cadets and the academic and military training given them at the U.S. Military Academy. The records also document the general administration and management of the Academy, as well as other unique aspects of the Post of West Point, including its grounds and architecture, band, boards and committees, historic cemetery, and special activities and events.
The collection consists of a variety of media. The textual records are comprised of manuscripts, press copies, typescripts, and published documents. They include cadet personnel and curricular records, as well as administrative correspondence, orders, returns, and Academy publications. Among the non-textual holdings are architectural drawings of Academy structures and cadet photographic portraits, as well as still photos, videos, and sound recordings of various Academy activities and events.
Note
*** The following records relating to USMA are available on NARA microfilm publications at the USMA Archives and the National Archives in Washington, DC:
*** General post records that do not bear directly upon the cadet experience or other unique aspects of West Point are not retained in the Academy Archives. Records in this category include civilian personnel records, personnel files of officers and troops stationed at West Point, and medical records.
